Why you should supplement with Enzymes

Three classes of elements are needed for good health — vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

Enzymes are at the heart of all the body’s activities, from digesting the food we eat to blinking our eyes. Without enzymes, there would be no life as we know it, since the human body is actually a series of thousands of enzymatic reactions happening at every moment! Today, we recognize the critical role of food-based enzymes for health and longevity, and this knowledge illuminates our understanding of the life-giving properties of food. (2)

The body uses enzymes to digest the food eaten. Enzymes to perform this task come from the food you eat (food enzymes) and internally from the digestive organs (digestive enzymes). But when food is cooked or processed at temperatures greater than 118° F, the enzymes in the food are destroyed. To compensate for these lost food enzymes, the body must work harder and create more digestive enzymes to fully digest the food.

A fresh raw food, however, will contain the right amount of enzymes to help digest itself, demanding fewer pancreatic enzymes, and therefore less energy from the digestive tract. Eating a lot of cooked or processed foods can force your digestive organs to work overtime. Some common consequences of poor digestion are heartburn, gas, bloating, constipation, and sluggishness.

Recently, research scientists have found evidence that impaired digestion, as well as decreased enzyme activity in the blood, is directly related to the aging process and many of the illnesses and chronic degenerative conditions so prevalent in modern society. These studies suggest that as we age, the number of enzymes and their activity levels decrease.

This is true for both animals and their humans!

Every living creature has inherited a certain “bank account” of enzymes and, if the food they eat contains little or nothing in the way of enzymes, then they are constantly drawing on their account in order to digest the food and the account becomes depleted. (1)

Enzymes are needed for every process in the body. The body puts digestion of food at the top of its list for enzyme production and if it is constantly producing enzymes for digestion, it cannot be producing enzymes required elsewhere for maintaining healthy tissue, cleaning up toxins, etc. Hence the downward slide into illhealth and shortened lifespan. That is why adding enzyme sources or supplements is vital for good health.

Raw food contains enzymes, cooked and processed food does not, but not all dogs will do well on raw food despite the enzyme potential. Enzymes are recommended whenever cooked food is eaten. That’s why making the addition of digestive enzymes is quite important. Dogs with depleted enzyme reserves (i.e. with health problems) will benefit from enzyme supplementation, either with food (to help with the digestive process) or between meals (to help with other processes). Without digestive enzymes even the most nutritious foods will not be of any use to the body. Pet’s diets (full of processed food and foods unnatural to them) strain the digestive system, making the addition of digestive enzymes even more important.

If our pets have inadequate amounts of digestive enzymes they will have a number of health problems including but not limited to; a weak immune system, arthiritis, allergies, coat condition problems, lack of energy, excessive gas, osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, digestive disorders, food allergies, hot spots, loose stool, consumption of their own stool, foul breath, body odor and even cancer.

Nobel-prize winner Dr. James B. Sumner of Cornell University suggested many years ago that we would get more nutrition from food if we increased our intake of plant enzymes. (3)

Benefits of Enzymes:

* Enables the body to obtain nutrients from food. * Improves nutritional absorption and energy level. * Strengthens the immune system. * Decreases risks of degenerative diseases, cholesterol, plaque build up and toxins * Increases T-Cell (cancer fighting cell) production * Raises white cell blood count. * Strengthens the immune system. * Reduces hunger craving. * Promotes weight loss.

Feed enzymes to your animals, and look for improvement in breath odor, energy levels, hair, and coat Enzyme supplementation is safe and easy. Your doctor can help you decide which product is best for your pet’s condition. My dog is doing very well on “Prozyme”, a natural plant derived enzyme supplement.

The role of enzymes to health is far greater than has been previously understood, says Mary L. Brennan, DVM, of Snellville, GA, in her book “The Natural Dog: A Complete Guide for Caring Owners”. ” In addition to the role that enzymes play in digesting foods,” she points out, “they are involved in every metabolic process, including the functions of the immune system, blood system, and the organs.”
